Back in the early 2000s when games such as Habbo Hotel and Club Penguin were released, a lot of introverts and neurodivergents who once struggled to socialise or communicate with other people found themselves on a platform where they could finally attempt to make some friends. Since then online gaming has proven to be a powerful tool that helps facilitate socialisation in a fun environment, where all involved take part in a hobby in which each individual finds common ground and less social pressures. Here are eight reasons why online gaming can be beneficial for these individuals:

1. Anonymity and Reduced Social Pressure:

From behind the screen introverts and neurodivergent folk are provided anonymity and less face-to-face communication which alleviates a lot of added stressors and anxiety that usually come along with social interactions. Interactions such as reading facial expressions, holding eye contact, and controlling one's own facial expressions often contribute to introvert's and neurodivergent people's anxieties during social connections. Furthermore, this level of anonymity allows individuals to freely express themselves.

2. Shared Interests and Common Ground:

Online games provide people with social anxieties and social difficulties the ability to socialise in an entirely different world where they can do whatever they like. They can farm, hunt, collect, fish, fly, drive a variety of different vehicles, create families, create armies, and can pretend to be a variety of different people and characters, even play as animals. This not only allows a form of self-expression and a different level of fun, but the ability to do these things with other people allows for a much wider range of things to discuss, such as the game itself, as well as extra activities to take part in whilst being able to socialize freely. The act of participation in itself lightens the mood and eases the mingling.

3. Supportive and Inclusive Communities:

Online gaming communities often embrace diversity and provide safe spaces and equal opportunities for participation and engagement to individuals from various backgrounds, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or neurodivergent condition. Gamers actively work to create inclusive environments, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance that can be particularly empowering for those who may face challenges in traditional social settings.

Furthermore, gamers frequently endeavour to establish guidelines and codes of conduct that promote respectful communication and discourage discriminatory behaviour within these communities and online gaming spaces. These guidelines set clear expectations for behaviour within the community and help maintain a supportive and nurturing environment. This is usually very helpful for a lot of neurodivergents who may often struggle with understanding boundaries and social norms. By having a community where guidelines are already set these boundaries and expectations become very clear. This also allows people with these struggles to learn to pick up these skills and incorporate them into their non-virtual lives.

4. Teamwork and Collaboration:

Online gaming provides an expansive and dynamic environment where cooperation and teamwork are essential for achieving shared goals. The process of working as a team in order to reach a shared objective not only helps cultivate valuable skills but also creates advantageous conditions for forming lasting friendships. The shared experiences, mutual achievements, and overcoming challenges together forges strong bonds between players. Through cooperative gameplay, individuals learn to build trust and rely on their teammates, as success often depends on effective communication, coordination, and mutual support. The experience in itself aids introverted and neurodivergent individuals to break down social barriers, as they discover the positive outcomes that come from actively engaging with others. As they interact with team members, they learn to express their thoughts, listen to others' perspectives, and adapt their strategies accordingly, thereby enhancing their communication and social skills in a collaborative setting.

5. Opportunities for Leadership and Self-Expression:

Online multiplayer games allows for a unique opportunity for people to explore and embrace a wide variety of duties, expressions and roles within a team, which not only augments and improves their gaming experience but also helps develop important leadership skills. By taking on leadership positions, such as raid leaders, dungeon masters, etc. individuals can develop qualities such as decision-making, strategic thinking, and effective communication. This process of assuming leadership responsibilities within the gaming community can have a profound impact on introverted and neurodivergent individuals, empowering them to step into positions of influence and showcase their unique abilities offline in the real world.

Furthermore, for introverted individuals, online gaming also serves as a way to express ones self fully, allowing them to break free from the constraints of traditional social settings that often cause stresses and anxieties. Within the gaming community, individuals can fully engage in their passions and interests, finding solace and confidence in their chosen roles. Whether it be through skilled gameplay, creative contributions, or leading discussions, introverted and neurodivergent individuals can make meaningful contributions that are recognized and valued within the gaming community. This recognition and validation can greatly enhance their self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment, allowing them to embrace their individual strengths and talents in a supportive and accepting environment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, not only does online multiplayer gaming provide anonymity and reduces social pressures, and allows an easier, more comfortable environment to socialise by providing common ground interest to begin with, but it also helps develop teamwork skills, collaborative skills, and leadership skills. It is however, important to remember that while online gaming can be a valuable social outlet, individuals should also be encouraged to seek a balance between virtual and offline interactions, as well as engage in other forms of socialization that align with their individual preferences and needs.
