This isn't supposed to be a "pick me" kind of post, but a list to inspire us on the Spectrum to face our hardships, and for Neurotypicals to see us in a different light. Us Autistics are absolutely tired, exhausted, fed up of these ugly stereotypes about us, and we're extremely tired of stating "the spectrum is a spectrum for a reason." So, I'll just leave these quotes here, many of which are from the mouths of Autists themselves;

  • “[We’ve] listened enough. It's time for [us] to speak, however it may sound. Through an electronic device, [our] hands or [our] mouth. Now it's your time to listen. Are you ready?”

    —Neal Katz

  • “If you got rid of all the autism genetics, you wouldn’t have science or art. All you would have is a bunch of social ‘yak yaks’”

    - Temple Grandin

  • “I don’t really understand why it’s considered normal to stare at someone’s eyeballs”

    - John Elder Robison

  • “My fear is that if I don’t mask, push through & show how capable I am, I won’t be offered opportunities in the future or be valued the same.”

    - Emily Swiatek

  • “My mind doesn’t stop; it spins and shifts in different directions creating webs of patterns, linked by varying hues.”

    - Michael Bowring

  • “Routine is a pivotal part of my daily life and any deviation, however slight, can cause great discomfort to me.”

    - Nathan Cornfield

  • “Autism is not a tragedy. Ignorance is the tragedy.”

    - Kerry Magro

  • “Research indicates that genetics are a significant factor in the development of autism, with heritability estimates around 80% .”

    - J. Grove (2019)

  • “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.”

    - Dr. Stephen Shore

  • “Autism can be diagnosed at any age, and many adults are diagnosed later in life as awareness and understanding of the condition increases.”

    -F. Happé (2016)
