Pokémon Theory: Nurse Joy is a Robot that replaces all your Pokémon.

An inevitable part of playing any Pokémon game is that within each battle, a Pokémon faces the potential of passing out. If not for the wonderfully kind and helpful Nurse Joy, the player would spend most of their money on revival potions, if not all their money. But what if Nurse Joy was actually killing off your Pokémon and replacing them with new ones instead?

In reality, one cannot truly rest and fully heal any living creature within “3 seconds” as Nurse Joy states in several of the Pokémon games. It is either magic, or something potentially dodgy is occurring here. Nurse Joy herself is rather creepy when you realise that not only is she one of thousands, but each time you leave a Pokémon center she cynically claims that she “hopes to see you again soon!” Many have theorised on Reddit, YouTube, and other sites that she could be a clone or potentially a Pokémon herself, but here is another possible theory.

From what can be seen within the Pokémon games as well as with the anime series, it is quite clear that the Pokémon universe is technologically advanced in several areas. You can store a living creature within a software, attain full biological information by presenting a small camera lens at said creature, each city has a radar sensor that can identify criminals in the area. Let’s not forget all the sorts of gadgets and gizmos found in the laboratories. So, it isn’t far-fetched to believe that Nurse Joy and the rest of her identical siblings are robots, created by one of the many Pokémon Professors.

By providing a community with a robot who essentially works as a vet, you take away the need to have to pay human beings for work, as well as speeding up the healing process by avoiding human error. But what if you could further speed up the process by replacing the Pokémon entirely? It would be incredibly advantageous to program the robot with a specific coding that attains the biological information of the Pokémon being held, including HP, PP, power abilities, and attack moves. Whether ethically or not, the specific Pokémon would then be eliminated and replaced by processing acquired data into the new Pokémon - Matrix-style – in which case, “healing” a Pokémon within 3 seconds would be technically possible.

In episode two of the Pokémon: Indigo League anime series, you see Nurse Joy transferring all the Pokémon from one center to another to protect them from Team Rocket’s attack. However, are they all Pokémon she is currently caring for, or are they backups to replace the ones she needs to “heal”? If Nurse Joy can heal any Pokémon within 3 seconds, why would there be a need for her to have poke balls filled with Pokémon in her storeroom? Not to mention with the amount of Chanseys and Pikachus seen in this episode it is obvious that Nurse Joy has several Pokémon on standby available for replacement when needed. Plus, every single Nurse Joy in every Pokémon game is never capable of saying more than 10 sentences, and what’s more robotic than that?
