17. Join a gaming club ✅
August 10th, 2024 – a date that will forever be etched in my memory as the day I took a leap into the unknown, diving headfirst into a world of dice rolls, strategy, and camaraderie. For the longest time, I’ve harbored a dream of joining a gaming club, but as a lonely, autistic introvert, that dream always seemed just a bit out of reach. Social situations can be daunting, and the thought of stepping out of my comfort zone was enough to spike my anxiety levels through the roof. But something inside me knew it was time for a change. I needed to embrace the hobby I loved and find people who shared that passion.
So, on that fateful day, I finally did it. I joined a gaming club! 😁
Walking through the doors of the club for the first time, my heart was pounding like I was about to face the final boss in an epic RPG. The room was filled with people huddled around tables, deeply engrossed in their games. A part of me wanted to turn around and retreat back into the safety of online gaming on BoardGameArena.com, where I had spent countless hours playing with strangers. But I took a deep breath, reminded myself of why I was there, and stepped further into the room.
The Games that Opened Up a New World
The first game I got to experience was Cubirds, a delightful game about collecting sets of beautifully illustrated birds. It was a change of pace from the high-stakes action of the previous games I had played in the past. The simple mechanics and stunning artwork made it easy to relax and enjoy the company of the people I was playing with. We laughed as we tried to outdo each other in creating the most impressive bird collections. Who knew that birds could bring people together like this?
Next up was X-Men United, a cooperative game where our group had to band together to defeat notorious villains from the X-Men universe. This game was a dream come true for my inner comic book fan. We strategized together, using our heroes' unique abilities to counter the villains' schemes. The sense of teamwork and the shared victory at the end was exhilarating. I couldn’t help but smile as we celebrated our hard-earned win (after 3 whole rounds of L's) – it was the first time I truly felt connected to my fellow club members.
Then there was Vendetta, a turn-based racing game of destruction. Imagine Mario Kart meets Mad Max – it’s chaotic, thrilling, and every decision matters. We were all trying to outmaneuver each other, leaving traps and obstacles in our wake while racing toward the finish line. It was the perfect icebreaker, and the tension was so palpable that I quickly forgot about my nerves and got lost in the game.
I also had the chance to play Captain Flip, a quirky tile-based game where you fill up your ship with a variety of different characters, each with their own effects and points. This game was a blast! The strategic choices and the interactions between the different characters on the ship made every turn exciting. There was something incredibly satisfying about seeing my ship come together, each character adding a new layer of complexity and strategy. Whether I was choosing a powerful bomber or a sneaky monkey, each decision felt like it could make or break my journey. And the best part? The light-hearted banter as we all tried to outwit each other while crafting the most efficient (or chaotic) crew. Captain Flip quickly became one of my new favourites, a game I know I’ll be eager to play again and again (and often do these days).
Of course, no gaming session would be complete without a round of Splendor. Having played it many times before, I was thrilled to see it on the table. There’s something timeless about Splendor’s elegant mechanics – collecting gems, securing development cards, and racing to build the most prestigious portfolio. Despite the familiarity, this game never gets old for me. The added thrill this time was playing it with new friends, sharing strategies and trying to outmaneuver each other in a friendly competition. It felt like a full-circle moment, bringing together the old and the new in a way that made me appreciate how far I’ve come on this journey.

More Than Just Games
As I reflect on the past few weeks, it’s clear that joining the gaming club has been about much more than just playing board games. It’s been about connecting with others, finding a community where I belong, and stepping out of my comfort zone in ways I never thought possible. The thrill of experiencing new games like Vendetta, X-Men United, Cubirds, and Captain Flip has been incredible, but the real joy has come from the people I’ve met along the way.
After being a lonesome gamer on boardgamearena.com playing online with strangers, I now have a large group of people I can play online games with daily, as well as the in person game days that last literal hours. The anxiety that once held me back is slowly being replaced by excitement and anticipation for what’s to come. I’m learning that it’s okay to be scared – in fact, it’s often a sign that something wonderful is about to happen.
I’m growing, not just as a gamer, but as a person. I’m learning to take risks, embrace the unknown, and find joy in the little victories, both on the game board and in life. The friendships I’m forming are just the beginning of what I hope will be a long and fulfilling adventure.
So, here’s to new friends, new games, and new adventures. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next! Whether it’s a high-stakes race to the finish line in Vendetta, teaming up to save the day in X-Men United, collecting a stunning array of birds in Cubirds, or filling my ship with colorful characters in Captain Flip, I know one thing for sure: I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
And who knows? Maybe someday I’ll be the one welcoming a nervous newcomer to the club, reminding them that the scariest leaps often lead to the most rewarding journeys. Joining a gaming club was a bucket list goal I had been dreaming about for a long time. But making it a reality? That’s a victory worth celebrating. Here's to many more games, friends, and experiences yet to come!
