The Dragon Prince is basically Avatar but set in a different era, and there are dragons.

Don't get me wrong, recently I've been binge-watching The Dragon Prince series and absolutely loving it. But, if we're being honest. It's basically the Avatar: The Last Airbender. Let me explain.
The storyline for The Dragon Prince is rather simple. There are three friends that go off on an adventure to save the world from a huge war breaking out, two of which happen to have magical powers, one of them does not. One of the characters in the group of three becomes highly esteemed (becomes royalty) throughout the show. Whilst the group go on their journey they have two creature friends with them at all times, a fat, yellow and blue lizard called Bait and a white/very light blue baby dragon called Azymondias. Whilst on their journey they sometimes go off on their separate ways, on their separate personal quests, which tend to help them grow and develop as individuals. The group of three make up to be two males (Callum & Ezran) and one female (Rayla), the female later becomes a love interest for one of the group members... Sound familiar at all? Oh, yeah, it's basically the Avatar animated series, but there are dragons.
Both, in The Dragon Prince and in the Avatar, the main protagonists are constantly battling within themselves in attempts to fully grasp and understand their own magical abilities. In the Avatar, Aang, is constantly at war with himself for not being calm and controlling enough to harness his earth abilities, it definitely does not help that his first and main ability is air which just so happens to be the polar opposite element to that of earth, thus making it Anng's hardest trial throughout the series. In The Dragon Prince Callum struggles with acquiring magical abilities at all. Being that he is a human, and human's are considered to be unmagical unless dealing with dark arts and black magic, and thus at one point throughout the show Callum worries that the only way he'll ever fully grasp magical abilities is turning to black magic which is something that he truly does not want to have to do. I understand that every series needs a struggle, and even more so that each protagonist needs something he needs to trial with in order for character development to occur, however, considering all the stark similarities throughout the series already, they could have given the protagonists different struggles rather than their magical abilities.

For me, the two most blatant and obvious similarities in the series are the following. The first being the initial title screen intros, both which involve books, chapters and the elements. I'm sorry, but it couldn't be any more obvious if they tried (I'll link both intros here for your research purposes: Avatar: The Last Airbender Intro and The Dragon Prince Intro). But the second most obvious similarity is due to one of the main characters in the series themselves. The main character in The Dragon Prince, Callum, acts and behaves exactly like Soka from the Avatar. When you research further into The Dragon Prince show you find out that the voice actor for the character Callum is the exact same voice actor that plays Soka. The least the creators of the show could have done was given the character a completely different personality, but they didn't even try to do that. Nope, Soka and Callum are basically the same person, merely one lacks magic or a desire for magic.
And finally, another major similarity between these two shows are the villains, the antagonists, the war starters of the show. In both series, the war starts are a Father of two (one boy and one girl) with way too much power, anger, jealousy and magical abilities who desires to rid the world of all other magical beings and creatures (in other words, a far rightest who hates everybody and believes only his way is the right way). This father has a son and he sends his son off on a ridiculous journey to kill off the protagonist or else they will lose all their dignity and lineage as well as be ridiculed for being a little pussy ass bitch.
Now, if none of these similarities seem as obvious to you as they do to me then the last thing I can suggest is to go ahead and watch both series back-to-back and I promise you, you will see it. Not only that, but, I think you'll probably even enjoy them (you'll enjoy The Dragon Prince if you enjoyed Avatar). Avatar: The Last Airbender will always hold a dear, safe space in my heart as it was an increasingly large part of my childhood, but I have to admit, I do very much enjoy The Dragon Prince and I am super excited for the next season to come out (if it ever decides to comes out). Plus, there's a lesbian couple in it, so represent!
